Preparation

Before entrusting me with your quilt there are a few checks to be done. First of all press all seams in the right direction - this is particularly important if you require stitch-in-the-ditch - and remove all loose and hanging threads, particularly the front . It is a good idea to machine stitch all round the edge 1/4" in to prevent seams unravelling. It is important that the backing should be cut "square" and be at least 4" larger all round than the top, and the wadding should be of similar size. The extra inches are to allow for attaching to the rollers at the top and bottom and for clamping at the sides. (You may find you need to purchase a little extra fabric to allow for squaring up.) Do check that pieced backs also conform to these criteria, i.e. they still need to be 4" larger and "square". If you require me to bind your quilt please don't forget to include sufficient fabric for this.

Attaching borders

To ensure that your borders are of equal length please measure and cut them before attaching to the quilt. The best way to do this is to measure the length of the quilt in three different places and take the average of these measurements to cut the side borders. Pin them evenly and sew easing any slight adjustment. When the side are done measure across the width in the same way to find the right length for the top and bottom.

How to complete a half binding

A half binding is when you have asked me to cut and attach the binding to the front of the quilt only so you can sew it down to the back yourself. Some ladies have been unsure how to cope with the corners so I've provided some illustrations to help.
